While I often talk about insurance-based employee benefits being
a way to set yourself apart from other employers, it’s also important to have a
positive work environment. Sometimes a break or having some fun in the office
can boost employee morale and encourage productivity. In previous blogs, I’ve
mentioned working from home and a four-day work week as ways to show employees
you care and set yourself apart as a desirable employer. While these are
encouraged, spending more time in the office can help create this environment as
well.
While those
two strategies can be massive changes for an employer, you could try to show
employees you care in less drastic ways too. Possibly a day a week or month
where employees can bring their pets into work. Organized activities unrelated
to work, engaging employees, but not with work. This could be company sports
teams, or any kind of competition. The list of offerings an employer could use
to put a smile on an employee’s face throughout the day could go on and on and
varies between different workplaces. A positive and engaging work environment
goes a long way in having happy employees and being a desirable employer.
Not only would
office activities and social events like this encourage a positive work
environment, but it will build camaraderie within the workplace. With many
employees consistently working online, friends in the workplace is becoming a
lost art. The option to work from home is a great way to keep employees happy,
but I believe keeping your employees connected and forming relationships with
coworkers can help a company thrive. Every company is different, and I would be
curious to hear your opinion on the topic.
