This summer the Philadelphia City
Council passed the Employee Commuter Transit Benefit Program. The program may require you to provide commuter benefits to your employees if you are in Philadelphia.
Commuting within Philadelphia isn’t
particularly easy, so this is a nice incentive for workers, and will encourage
employees back towards an in-person work setting. While directly beneficial to
employees receiving their commuting compensation, it will create a more
competitive market for employers looking to hire and retain top talent. Companies
whose benefits packages had an edge on others with this benefit before are now
at a more level playing field, and companies outside the city must realize the competition
they are up against. Especially since cities tend to have higher average
salaries than surrounding areas, and commuting is no longer going to be a problem
for most people.
Retaining and hiring new employees has been difficult, and the market only seems to be getting more competitive. With ancillary benefits such as commuter benefits now being mandated by the government it is becoming more complex to stand out as an employer who goes the extra mile to keep their employees engaged and happy. Who doesn’t love a little competition though?
