Mental Health And Your Employees, FMLA Updates You Need to Know

Employee Benefits are ever-changing, and examples of that can always be seen. On May 25th, the Department of Labor (DOL) released a new fact sheet on mental health issues in the workplace. With mental health coming to the forefront of our world and more evident in day-to-day life, employees taking time off due to mental health issues has been more common. With this new fact sheet from the DOL, it helped to clarify to key decision makers what is mandated for employees being able to take medical leave under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

The FMLA has helped employees be more secure in taking time they need to help with their and their dependents mental health. This fact sheet listed various situations where an employee is allowed to take leave to help their mental health without fear of being discriminated against. This includes situations where an employee uses leave for their own serious mental health condition, if the employee is caring for a family member with a health condition or are caring for an adult child. For the DOL to clarify and create awareness around situations where mental health can lead to employees needing to take time off will be beneficial not only to the employees, but to employers as well.

Employees feeling that they are in an adequate situation to work and provide their best effort to their employer will lead to happier employees, better output from them and more positive results for the company. In a time where employers are struggling to find workers allowing your current staff to take the time they need to be able to contribute their best self to the team will prove to be beneficial. This is also just the federal requirement, with mental health now being as acknowledged as ever employers may offer more leniency towards their staff and mental health leave to attract more talent. No matter how an employer approaches this, it is great to see that people can take the time they need to do what they can to help their mental health.
