Artificial Intelligence (AI) vs Human Errors on the Job, A Big Win ?

The insurance industry has been embracing AI technology and machine learning over the last few years. Insurance companies are trying to find ways to stop work place injuries before they happen. Traditional safety practices and training have helped reduce frequency but unfortunately, work injuries still occur. Many experts feel the reason is that employers really do not know the true scenarios that expose workers to injuries. They are looking to AI for warnings and action. Here are some examples.

1)   A construction worker putting in drywall wants to take off his hard hat just for a few seconds on a hot day. As he grabs the brim the hard hat's AI sensors blare a siren as it has detected a falling metal bar from the construction taking place on a mezzanine above.

2) Biometric sensors in a vest on a production line worker, send a signal to the manager that the employee is bending and lifting in a way that can cause injuries. The line manager attends to the worker and gives the additional training to correct the behavior and avert an injury.

3) Digital cameras set up on a roof, see the workers are drifting toward the edges of the roof near the protection screens. The camera sends a notification to the foreman on the job who is able to re-direct the work in progress to avoid a fall.

These are just a few examples of AI working to avoid human errors on the job and prevent work place injuries. As technology becomes more intelligent, insurance companies and employers will most likely see lower claims and lower premiums. At least that is what most experts are predicting.

Until next time be careful out there and know your risks.
