Frequent Out Reach To Injured Workers Is Good Risk Management

Here is a true story about a business owner who discovered the benefits of keeping in touch with injured workers when they are out on work comp benefits. Over the years when injuries did occur, the owner would frequently reach out to workers at home and check in with them. A simple call to see how they were progressing with treatments and to let them know they still have a place at work when they heal up. This simple strategy, by the owner, has shown great results over the years. The company's work comp return to work rate is astonishing and employees time out of work has been substantially mitigated.

Contact to injured employees by insurance company case nurses and adjusters has been a strategy by the insurance industry for many years. This has shown to help lower the costs of work comp payouts. However the involvement in this process by owners and company managers is not as readily practiced, mostly because of the insurance company doing it as part of the claim process.

The business owner in the above story has made a strong case that owners involvement in communicating with injured workers has great benefits. There are certainly times when this may not be advisable, however the simple fact that injured workers desire to get well and get back to work may increase when the boss shows they care.

Until next time be careful out there and know your risks.
